Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims?

?

Electronic Systems and Internet-of-Things (IoT) are among the key technologies that play important roles in modern-day living. Various sectors, including business, commerce, communication, education, entertainment, healthcare and transportation, require Electronic Systems and IoT for efficient operation. The programme aims to develop graduates with a wide range of professional knowledge and skills relevant to Electronic Systems and Internet-of-Things (IoT). The programme covers leading-edge technologies in electronic engineering, with a focus on IoT and related applications. These include artificial intelligence of things, robotics, sensor technologies, electronic devices and their associated software to sense, measure, interpret, connect and analyse data.

?

Programme Characteristics

The programme aims at developing students into professionals in the fields of electronic and communication engineering with specialisms in the Internet-of-Things (IoT). The programme covers leading-edge technologies in electronic engineering, with a focus on IoT and related applications.

This programme emphasises both theory and application in learning and teaching. The curriculum includes lectures, projects, presentations, laboratory exercises and various industry training and placement opportunities. After completing the fundamental subjects in Year One, students may choose their professional development specialism by selecting subjects in different areas in Year Two.

?

The programme curriculum is designed for students who have already studied some fundamental subjects in electronics, engineering science, programming, information technology and mathematics. The Year One curriculum consists mainly of intermediate and advanced subjects in the various areas of IoT such as telecommunications, computers, data and computer communications, integrated circuits, control engineering, embedded systems and programming. In Year Two, students can choose from among a list of advanced technical elective subjects, and complete a capstone project to strengthen their technical knowledge and skills.

?

Students can gain workplace training opportunities within and outside Hong Kong through Work-Integrated Education (WIE).

?

Engineering and Entrepreneurship Club (E&E Club) provides a platform to enhance students’ interests in engineering and understanding of entrepreneurship. E&E Club organises workshops to train students’ technical skills and invites experts to share about the requirements of entrepreneurship with students. It further supports students participating in both local and overseas underwater robot competitions.?

?

Seminars, industry visits and overseas study tours are also organised to broaden students’ horizons.

?

Recognition & Prospects

Professional Recognition

?

The BEng (Hons) in Electronic Systems and Internet-of-Things has been granted full accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).

?

Career Prospects

?

The internet of things (IoT) is a fast-developing field throughout the world. According to Fortune Business Insights, the global loT market was valued at US$190 billion in 2018 and is projected to reach US$1,102.6 billion by 2026. However, Immersat Research finds that around 47% of organisations surveyed do not possess sufficient IoT skills and are outsourcing such work. Gartner Research predicts that around 75% of IoT projects may take twice as long as they should because of the shortage of loT talent. In 2020, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region published the Hong Kong Smart City Blueprint 2.0, in which the Government put forward over 130 initiatives, many of them related to IoT. This programme aims at training IoT professionals who will meet Hong Kong's pressing manpower need in the emerging IoT area. Students will acquire the necessary professional skills that enable them to contribute to IoT development in Hong Kong and overseas by participating in various loT projects in both public sectors and private companies.

Student Message

As a new graduate of the Electronic and Information Engineering degree programme, I now have a great deal of useful knowledge covering areas such as the operating principles of different electronic components, data and mobile communication theories and various programming languages. I can now design electronic devices and develop application software.

The programme provides many opportunities for students to engage in group projects that consolidate the knowledge gained in class. For example, for the Integrated Project, we constructed a robot that could move by tracking a white line and complete assigned tasks.

The EIE Department also has excellent facilities. There are a number of laboratories and computer labs equipped with useful software packages such as MatLab, Visual Studio and Eclipse. This convenient access helped us finish our assignments and projects.

It's been an honour to graduate from the Electronic and Information Engineering (EIE) degree programme. The invaluable lessons learned from all the professors, instructors and tutors had greatly benefited me, not to mention the all-rounded facilities and support provided by the department.

An integrated project in the curriculum had provided us an opportunity to learn electronics. I had a chance to assemble a robotic car and programme it to track a line and complete various tasks. This project had equipped me with solid knowledge in electronic components, embedded system and programming skills.

It is more exciting upon reaching the final year when a range of elective subjects are available. These subjects cover topics like computer vision, cloud computing, and network security, which are highly related to modern technologies like AI, AWS and TLS, to name a few.

In addition to the technical foundations that this course had provided, I also had the opportunity to collaborate with talents from other fields. For example, multidisciplinary manufacturing project required students from different fields to work collaboratively on a cross-displinary project; similarly, multidisciplinary final-year project required students from different fields to work collaboratively on a larger scale and more challenging project.

With the technical knowledge gained and all-rounded training received from EIE, I feel that I am well-prepared to face the era of the metaverse.
